JAMAICA

Jamaica is famed for its natural beauty—mountains and rivers; which give it the nickname “land of wood and water”. Kingston is the capital of Jamaica. This country is very popular for its various islands –Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios—all of which an overview will follow. 

HIGHLIGHTS

There are many reasons to visit Jamaica; it’s considered one of the most romantic holiday destinations in the world. Many honeymoons and weddings take place on the island of “One Love”. Additionally, Bachelor/Hen’s parties take place here; along with many travelers arriving for spring break.  Others visit for historical and educational purposes.

BEST TIME TO TIME TO VISIT

To truly enjoy your Jamaican experience, the best time to travel the island is November and December. During this time the weather is most pleasant; ranging between 70-80 degrees. Additionally, hotels and flights are easier to find.

 

CLIMATE

The weather in Jamaica is nice all year round. However, heat and humidity is most occurring—with average temperature ranges between 80-90 degrees; and sunshine on most days—always vacation friendly weather. But, there are two rainy seasons per year—from May—June and September –November. Hurricanes might pass over the island during June—November.

There are many lovely sights to see in Jamaica, here are a few: Blue Lagoon, Blue Mountains, Rose Hall Plantation, 7 Mile Beach, Reach Falls, Blue Hole, Frenchman’s Cove, Pelican Bar, Rio Grande River, Dunn’s River Fall.

 

GETTING AROUND

In Jamaica, driving is on the left side of the road. Car rental is available in major areas. Kingston has public transportation—large coach buses run regularly on popular routes. Minibuses, route taxis, and buses are used on the islands. Route taxis at designated pickup and drop offs are the fastest and least expensive way to go—always around the corner—just stick out your hand and wave. Minibuses commute from town to town; check fares and destinations before boarding. The Knutsford Express—comfortable air conditioned coaches with luggage compartment, complimentary water, free Wi-Fi  and restroom,  offers daily scheduled service to all the islands and resort areas. There are also private drivers available—simply ensure they are approved and bear a Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) identification tag.

  • Montego Bay to Negril 52 miles or 1.5 hours

  • Montego Bay to Ocho Rios 62 miles or 2.0 hours

  • Ocho Rios to Kingston 60 miles or 1.5 hours

  • Negril to Ocho Rios 110 miles or 3 hours

CURRENCY

The Jamaica dollar is used as currency. Resorts provide access to licensed cambio centers and commercial banks to exchange money. The official currency exchange rate varies daily, so it’s advisable to shop around for the best rate before converting your cash. Most ATMs accept international bank cards with VISA, Master Card, Cirrus and Plus Logo. Banks also give credit card advances and change traveler’s checks.

 

LANGUAGE

Officially, Jamaicans people speak English but they mix it up with their own island version of Patois—Jamaican Creole.

 

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
  1. It’s advisable to pay attention to the news; and travel in groups.

  2. Bring original passport and copies of IDs in case of loss or thief.

  3. Review local laws and practices before you arrive.

  4. Give family and friends back home itinerary information in case of emergency.

  5. Register your visit with your country embassy or consulate before you travel—so they are aware of your whereabouts in case of an emergency.

  6. Keep luggage, purse, back pack in view at all times—ensure possessions are close to your body.

  7. Do not carry large sums of cash.

  8. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry on road trips and excursions.

  9. The electrical supply is 110volts, and electrical appliances use plugs that are two-pronged and flat (such as those used in the U.S.A. and Canada). Bring your adapter or convertors.

Montego Bay

 

HIGHLIGHTS

Montego Bay, also called MoBay is the second largest city in Jamaica. It’s known for golden beaches, palm covered hills, historical plantations, and more lodging than the other islands. There are many places to stay in MoBay. But for first time visitors, the best place to stay for sightseeing is along the main beach area near Doctor’s Cave Beach and Gloucester Ave. Those seeking more seclusion, the stretch of beaches northeast and south of town are home to most exclusive, upscale resorts.

 

ACTIVITIES OR SIGHTS TO SEE

To make the most of your stay, Montego Bay offers half day and full day tours of the area. There are tours of historic plantations; popular beaches—Doctor’s Cave and Cornwall Beach; horseback riding on the beach; rafting on Martha Brae River; Zip lining; Glistening Waters Luminous Lagoon; Scuba diving and snorkeling; Golfing at the Tryall Club; Harbour St. popular shopping area; Gloucester Ave., known as the “hip strip” boasts of restaurants, art galleries and duty free shops. Also, the Montego Bay Yacht Club host bi-annual Pineapple Cup Montego Bay Race; and each year Reggae Sumfest is held.

Ocho Rios

HIGHLIGHTS

Ocho Rios is the port of call for many cruise lines. It also has some of the most luxe resorts and spas in the Caribbean. There are many child centered attractions located on this island; perfect for families because it’s filled with adventure. Many great restaurants can be found here as well.

 Negril

 
HIGHLIGHTS

Negril is a small beach resort town; situated in western Jamaica. It is known for 7 miles of sandy beaches on shallow bays and calm turquoise water. Seven mile beach, particularly the portion overlooking Long Bay, is lined with bars, restaurants and resorts—many all-inclusive. Negril is also known for having some of the best parties; and is famous for nightlife scenes of reggae beats on Norman Manley Boulevard; along with the Sweet Spice Restaurant –a seafood favorite of tourist and locals.
